Granger Cobb Institute for Senior Living Student Receives Inaugural LCS Foundation Scholarship
The Granger Cobb Institute for Senior Living at Washington State University (WSU) has announced Karin Yoshida as the recipient of the 2024 LCS Foundation University Scholarship. Yoshida was selected by the Granger Cobb Institute for Senior Living scholarship committee and is the first recipient of this annual scholarship at WSU. Yoshida is a junior pursuing a major in hospitality business management with a minor in senior living management.
“I am passionate about pursuing a career in senior living because I have always aspired to use my skills and experiences to assist and help as many people as possible,” Yoshida said. “With this scholarship, I am empowered to strive even harder towards achieving my future aspirations.”
Karin’s grandmother, currently living alone in Japan, is her inspiration for pursuing a path in the senior living industry. “When I asked my mother why she hadn't considered a senior living community for my grandmother, I was surprised to learn about the negative social views towards senior living communities in Japan,” she said. “This revelation saddened me deeply. It sparked my interest in exploring senior living communities in the U.S., hoping to understand how they operate differently and possibly envisioning a future where I could manage and operate a community in Japan where my parents and other seniors can live comfortably.”
Karin added she is thankful for the support she has received at WSU. “I am deeply grateful to Darcie Bagott and Nancy Swanger for helping me discover my passion for senior living management,” Yoshida said. “I am also thankful to the individuals I have met throughout my journey who have generously shared their knowledge and deepened my interest in this industry.”
The LCS Foundation has established a partnership with the Granger Cobb Institute for Senior Living at WSU to support the continued education of students pursuing degrees in the senior living industry. Through the program, university scholarships are awarded annually. Other schools where scholarships are in place include Northwood University, the University of Northern Iowa, and the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire.
