LCS Foundation Names 2024 Ed and Sue Kenny Scholarship Recipient
The LCS Foundation has awarded the 2024 Ed and Sue Kenny Scholarship to Anna Schmitz of Iowa State University (ISU). The annual scholarship supports the education and professional development of undergraduate and graduate students pursuing a degree in the field of senior living. Schmitz is a senior pursuing a major in healthcare management.
“More than just financial support, this scholarship affirms my passion for senior living and my commitment to making a real impact,” said Schmitz. “It reinforces my belief that the work I’m doing, both in and out of the classroom, is meaningful and valued.”
Anna’s close relationship with her grandparents helped ignite her passion for healthcare management. “My career choice is in part influenced by my close relationships with my grandparents, both those still with us and those who have passed,” she said. “These personal connections have deepened my appreciation for the elderly and sparked my passion to ensure they receive the care and attention they deserve.”
Schmitz gained valuable firsthand experience working with seniors this past summer during her time as an administrative intern at Green Hills Retirement Community in Ames, Iowa as part of the LCS internship program.
“My time at Green Hills has shown me the powerful impact of meaningful relationships between residents, caregivers, and staff,” said Schmitz. “The opportunity to work in this field has deepened my appreciation for the wisdom and stories that our senior population holds, and it has driven me to contribute to their quality of life in meaningful ways.”
Schmitz added she is grateful for the support she has received during her academic and career journey. “I want to thank Dr. Natallia Gray, Assistant Dean and Director of the B.S. Healthcare Management Program at Iowa State, for her dedication to creating opportunities for students and for supporting my academic and professional growth,” she said. “I also want to thank Calista Sievers, Executive Director at Green Hills, for being an incredible mentor whose guidance has fueled my passion for senior living and solidified my career path.”
After graduating, Schmitz plans to obtain her administrator’s license and pursue a leadership role in senior living where she can have a direct impact on improving the quality of care and life for seniors.
The Ed & Sue Kenny Scholarship was founded in 2019 to promote the education and professional development of undergraduate and graduate students pursuing a degree at any college or university in the field of senior living. The scholarship program is open each year to qualifying students across the country. The next application process will begin in July 2025.
